Teamwork, Camaraderie and Family
Getting to Know the Emergency Squad
By Diane M. Loeffler
When you read or hear words like teamwork, camaraderie and family, what comes to mind? For those volunteers who devote a portion of their time to The Emergency Squad, these words describe how they feel about the people they work with for one shift every eight days. Many added that their co-workers are their best friends.
Listening to these men and women as they sat around a large table in The Ready Room, anyone could see that they care about one another. Working together in The Emergency Squad, they form a bond.
The members of the Squad retired after careers as secretaries, teachers, principals, paralegals, nurses, office workers, blue collar workers and just about every other career you can name. They assist The Emergency Squad in a number of different roles: Emergency Medical Technicians, Emergency Medical Responders, Drivers, Dispatchers, Receptionists, Cooks, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs with various specialties, Maintenance Workers and other positions.
Since all of these roles contribute to providing the free services that are available to us all, there will separate articles about the different positions. Maybe one of the roles will sound like it might be a good fit for you. If so, you can always stop in at one of their Open Houses to talk with members of the Squad. These open houses begin at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Squad’s Training Facility on 124 South Pebble Beach. Attending them does not oblige you to join. Whether something sounds like a good opportunity to you or not, at the end of the series, you will understand more about the Squad.
